Suwon Museum of History
Suwon Museum of History is exhibiting the history and culture of Suwon by composing them for each era and theme with the aim of elevating the understanding of the visitors on the exhibits through usage of actual relics, and various media such as panels, images, diorama, models and kiosk.

Suwon in Modern Era

With introduction of modern civilization the lifestyle of people underwent substantial changes. Widely spreading usage of paper currency with face value of 1 Korean won, insurance certificates, leaflets, and camera illustrate such changes. In addition, visitors can imagine the lifestyle of the students of the time through the exhibits on certificates of award, academic report cards and graduation albums used at schools and photographs related to school life in the region of Suwon.
Ceaseless resistance for independence from the occupation of Japan continued in Suwon, and visitors can view the images of such resistance by searching the information available through the kiosk. In addition, photographs containing the sceneries of Suwon at the time has been edited into video clips and illustrated at the Museum.

Suwon during 1950’s ~1960’s

Suwon concentrated on restoration of the city damaged by the Korean War, and this provided the opportunity for Suwon to become the central city in Gyeonggi-do as it became the capital city of Gyeonggi Province. Calling cards of various retail shops were included in the new map of Suwon published in 1957, thereby enabling the viewers imagine the scenic outlook of the streets of Suwon at the time, which can further be verified through exhibits including Suwon photo album, commemorative photo album of the first city assembly of Suwon, armband worn during the 4.19 Movement and the speeches made on the capital city of Gyeonggi-do. In addition, visitors can the images of Hwasung destroyed by the war and restored afterwards can be verified through step vision. The efforts put in after the 1970’s in which urban planning commenced and implemented in earnest can be searched for each year in order for visitors to view the changes in Suwon along with explanations and photographs.

Model of the 1960’s

Model of Nammoon market in the 1960’s was produced to enable young students to acquire diverse range of experiences and middle aged people to experience the nostalgia of the past. Joongang Movie Theater, Yebbeuda boutique shop, Cheondeok Mart and Hwachoonok in Nammonn during the 60’s were reproduced, and established the ambience of the market by inserting sound effects. In order to convey the feeling of the daily livelihood of the market, yelping of the rooster to indicated the breaking of the dawn, and produced the feeling of early morning hours, daytime and night time by applying lighting.
